Job postings reveal what Amazon has planned for its Bellevue expansion

Amazon’s recent job postings suggest the Seattle-based company has big plans for Bellevue.

A significant portion of the 481 open Bellevue-based jobs listed on Amazon’s website as of Friday are for Project Kuiper, Amazon’s initiative to launch more than 3,000 low-orbit satellites to provide high-speed broadband around the world.

Amazon’s 72 Project Kuiper job postings represent about 15 percent of its total openings in Bellevue. Bellevue is also the only location in which Amazon is hiring for the project.

Most of the company’s Bellevue job openings are for Amazon’s operations technology organization, which it said is the team that builds software and hardware to deliver billions of items each year. Other organizations that feature prominently in Amazon job postings are for Amazon Devices and Amazon Web Services cloud unit.

Amazon is establishing a presence in Bellevue that will rival the company’s second headquarters in Virginia.

The Business Journal estimates that Amazon will have a total of 3.9 million square feet in Bellevue, enough for more than 25,000 employees.

Amazon recently signed a long-term lease for a two-tower, 715-square-foot Trammell Crow Co. development in Bellevue expected to be completed in 2022. The company also paid $195 million for the 10-story Bellevue Corporate Center in downtown Bellevue. The center occupies part of the 3.5-acre site, and the seller was planning a two-tower hotel and office project.

Amazon previously leased more than 1 million square feet in Bellevue. That’s enough for 6,900 employees based on 150 square feet per employee. Amazon has said it plans to have 4,500 employees in Bellevue by 2020, but the company’s growing real estate footprint in the region suggests bigger plans.
