Job postings provide insight into Amazon’s Bellevue expansion

Recent job postings provide insight into what teams Amazon may be planning to locate in its massive Bellevue expansion and suggest the company is already ramping up hiring there.

Amazon.com Inc. has so far committed to at least 1.03 million square feet in Bellevue and has expressed plans to reach 4,500 employees there by 2020.

The company lists roughly 150 online postings for Bellevue jobs primarily for its Amazon Web Services, Amazon Devices and Amazon Alexa teams, although the company may be planning to hire more than one candidate per position.

While Amazon’s career websites include jobs posted as far back as May 2016, about one-third of the positions have been posted in the last month or so.

Nearly 42 percent of the job postings on Amazon’s website for Bellevue are for its cloud division Amazon Web Services, compared to about 28 percent of jobs postings in Seattle for that division. An additional 29 percent of jobs are for Amazon Devices (such as the company’s Echo smart speaker) and nearly 15 percent are for voice technology division Alexa.

The company in August signed a lease for all 400,000 square feet in Tower 333, the 20-story building Expedia plans to vacate, and in April 2017 leased the 354,000-square-foot Centre 425 building, which the company internally calls “Amazon Everest.”

Amazon has yet to confirm an additional 280,000 square feet at Hines’ Summit III tower in downtown Bellevue, which has been listed in multiple commercial real estate market reports. A commercial real estate industry source in December told the Business Journal Amazon had signed a lease in the building.

Amazon spokesman Sam Kennedy said at the time of Amazon’s Tower 333 lease that the company already had 2,000 employees in Bellevue and planned to add 2,500 additional employees by 2020.
